Liam Sardea

Academic | Writer | Educator

Liam Sardea is a PhD Candidate (2021 — 2024) in Aesthetic Philosophy at the University of Melbourne. His research addresses the problem of creativity and the protean powers of the imagination, and how this figures as an instrumental part of our experience of the everyday. To give meaning, depth, and magnitude to this discussion, the Kantian sublime provides the model to appreciate the radical activities of the creative imagination, especially the power to realise, de-realise, and re-realise the worlds we inhabit.

Whilst completing his doctoral thesis, Liam is oriented towards the goal of establishing an olfactory culture, promoting the aesthetic virtues of fragrance and to enable rational and meaningful dialogue about the experiences ‘felt’ by the senses - smell in particular. Liam passionately works with others to develop an olfactory literacy informed by his interests in hermeneutics.

These two projects intertwine and is indicative of a far-reaching passion for effective communication and education. Liam is an occasional freelance writer and sessional university tutor on matters of culture and taste.

He is currently the Grooming Editor and Curator for NOAH.

  • My academic interests have always consisted of an eclectic assortment, ranging from the anthropological and historical study of food and eating cultures and the question of ‘taste’ from both a philosophical and sociological perspective; the study of wine (oenology); the critical theories of the Frankfurt School, especially critiques of highly administered and rationalised society and the Enlightenment Project; studies of the (radical) world-creating capacity of the imagination; the social theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Cornelius Castoriadis; the utopic theory of Ernst Bloch; Kant’s critical project concerning cognition, aesthetics, anthropology, and the sublime; studies of everyday life and consumer objects; the cultural criticism of Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag; and Postmodern theory including Lyotard, Derrida, Deleuze and Baudrillard.

  • Between 2015—2021, I was employed by Men’s Biz in the role of Fragrance Curator. During my time with the company, I launched over 100 products and oversaw content, training, and PR pertaining to fragrance. Most notably, I introduced Tauer Perfumes, Tauerville, Czech & Speake, and Knize to the Australian market for the very first time.

Between 2021—2023, I was the Director of Education and Training in addition to the chief Content Creator for LKNU Parfumerie.

Since 2023, I have acted as the Grooming Editor for NOAH, with primary curatorial and writing responsibilities. To date, I have launched FZOTIC Perfumes, Essential Parfums, Zoologist Perfumes, Rogue Perfumery, and Bogue Profumo.

  • My professional and critical engagement with perfume is globally recognised. I started a perfume blog in 2014 and named it Olfactics. Like many, what was initially a hobby grew to become its very own platform as part of a broad and exciting community of enthusiasts. A whiff of Brin de Reglisse by Hermès (2007) was all it took to incite this (now) inextricable facet of my life.

There are too many occasions to recount in this section, and can be found in its own dedicated page. Examples of my work, and some of my favourite fragrances, can also be found on this page.

  • I have had the privilege to both tutor and lecture in academic contexts.

Since 2021, I tutored and lectured A Taste of Europe: Melbourne Intensive (EURO20007/EURO30006).

As a casual appointee, I was responsible for conducting high-quality tutorials and formal assessment marking/grading for undergraduate students enrolled in the course studying the relationships between local/regional/national cuisine and questions of culture, identity, belonging, and authenticity at the complex intersection of sociological, anthropological, historical, and philosophical thought.

  • I have both written for and have appeared in publications across various mediums.

In 2015, I appeared as the main subject in an article in The Age entitled Sniffing out an Arts degree from the University of Melbourne.

In 2018, I wrote a perspective for Fragrantica entitled The Difficulties of a Niche Market: An Australian Perspective.

In 2019, I was a contributor to the blog Man of Style, in which I wrote 4 articles on food and drink - including 2 restaurant reviews.

In 2020, I acted as a ghostwritter for an article published by Broadsheet entitled The Principles: Men’s Grooming Essentials at Home.

In January 2022, I gave an interview to Broadsheet Melbourne entitled Now Open: The Ultra-Luxe LKNU Specialises in Niche, Hard-To-Find Perfumes.

In June 2022, I was the subject of an article for Nez, which addressed curatorial practices and market tastes in Australia.
